Concurrently, the Ministry of Highways has issued specific draft guidelines regarding this initiative. Under these drafts, a new fuel category designated as E85 will be introduced, comprising a blend of 85% ethanol mixed with petrol.
Moreover, the framework extends to E100, a category designed for vehicles capable of running entirely on ethanol. It is worth noting that following the release of the draft rules, the government solicited suggestions from the public before reaching a final decision.

It is pertinent to mention that the primary objective behind increasing the ethanol content is to make a concerted effort to reduce the nation’s dependence on crude oil imports a necessity that has become particularly acute amidst the supply disruptions caused by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Furthermore, the government has affirmed its commitment to emphasizing increased ethanol blending as a strategy to diminish reliance on imported crude oil, thereby fostering greater energy independence. The draft notification thus outlines a unique initiative to expand the existing classification of fuels.
What to Expect from the Scheme ?

For instance, the designation for petrol will be revised from ‘E10’ to ‘E10/E20’.
Additionally, ‘E85’ and ‘E100’ fuels will be explicitly incorporated into the regulatory framework to facilitate their advancement. Furthermore, the notification introduces specific proposals across various vehicle categories; notably, there is a proposal to increase the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) limit from 3,000 kg to 3,500 kg.
Moreover, the classification for hydrogen fuel within this notification has been revised from ‘Hydrogen + CNG’ to ‘Hydrogen-CNG’ a significant and distinct change.

In this regard, cars manufactured after April 2023 are expected to comply with E20 standards; specifically, they are required to be physically compatible with ethanol blends containing up to 30% ethanol.

It should be noted that ethanol tends to increase moisture absorption; consequently, accelerated corrosion is a critical factor for which manufacturers must adequately prepare.
