The Flex-Fuel version of Royal Enfield’s most popular bike, the Classic 350, has garnered significant attention. According to news reports, this bike can run on E20 or higher ethanol-blended fuel, which could help reduce riding costs.

The Royal Enfield Classic 350 Flex-Fuel motorcycle was spotted undergoing testing on the streets of Chennai, clearly displaying an ‘E85’ badge on its fuel tank. This indicates that the company is now actively working towards developing ethanol-based fuel technology.
The Government of India is also promoting flex-fuel and ethanol-blended fuels with the aim of reducing dependence on petrol and curbing pollution. According to reports, this bike may be capable of running on high-blend fuels such as E85 (85% ethanol).
Major Clue Emerges from Chennai Testing
The Royal Enfield Classic 350 Flex-Fuel was recently spotted undergoing testing on the streets of Chennai. Notably, the bike appeared visually almost identical to the current Classic 350; however, the ‘E85’ badge affixed to its fuel tank sets it apart as something truly special. This very badge serves as the strongest indication that the company is now seriously working on flex-fuel technology.

What does the E85 badge mean?
E85 refers to a blend consisting of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. It is a high-ethanol blend fuel that is considered more eco-friendly than traditional petrol.
When a bike bears an E85 badge, it signifies that its engine has been designed or modified to operate smoothly even with this high-ethanol fuel.

Classic 350 Flex Fuel Bike
Recent testing images and reports clearly indicate that the exterior design of the new Royal Enfield Classic 350 Flex-Fuel bike has undergone minimal changes. Viewed from the front, it appears nearly identical to the standard Classic 350, suggesting that the company has successfully preserved its distinct identity and retro aesthetic. The actual modifications are being implemented internally specifically within the engine and fuel system—to enable the bike to support ethanol-based fuels.
Essentially, implementing Flex-Fuel technology necessitates modifications to certain internal components of the engine. This involves redesigning the fuel injection system, fuel lines, and specific materials to ensure they can safely and reliably withstand prolonged exposure to ethanol. However, it is worth noting that these changes are largely confined to the internal mechanics; the entire bike has not been redesigned from scratch, but rather, the existing platform has been upgraded.
If this technology proves successful, there is a strong possibility that Royal Enfield could integrate it across its entire range of 350cc platform motorcycles. This would enable the company to simultaneously prepare multiple models for future fuel systems.
